Mid-Harvest Report 2015
Francois Viljoen from VinPro has mentioned the following of the harvest, “this is the earliest harvest in decades. The main reasons for this were a warm August, followed by a dry and extremely windy summer. But ideal dry conditions during harvest insured healthy grapes without rot and diseases”.
We also started harvesting earlier at Beyerskloof, in fact a full 10days earlier than normal. For me this is the earliest harvest since I started in 2006! The Pinotage and Pinot Noir that is in the cellar look brilliant, with intense colour and excellent fruits. In the next couple of weeks we will finish off with the Pinotage and bring in Merlot, Cinsaut and for the first time Shiraz. We will probably be done with harvest by the middle of March, which will mean we can go on Easter holiday for a change!
In general the quality of the grapes looks great and the volume is up on the 2014 harvest, so for what more can a winemaker ask. Look out for the 2015 vintage in 2 years’ time or more, I am sure it will be a one of the best vintages so far in the new Millennium.
