WINE BY THE NUMBERS. 7000 wines from more than 70 countries were entered into the International Wine & Spirit Competition 2008, the premier competition of its kind in the world, held in London recently. Amongst the Trophies being announced 15 were open to wines from anywhere in the world. Of these, South Africa picked up five but even more remarkable is the fact that four of these trophies were won by producers that come from within a radius of ten kilometers.

From the Hutton soils of the Simonsberg to the renowned gravel hills of the Bottelary ward this specific pocket clearly have world-class qualities. The winning trophies were The Mission Hill Family Estate Trophy for Chardonnay presented to Delheim Wines for their Delheim Chardonnay Sur Lie 2007.The Spier Trophy for Merlot presented to Hartenberg for their Hartenberg Merlot 2005. The KWV Trophy for Pinotage presented to Beyerskloof for their Tesco Finest Beyers Truter Pinotage 2006. The Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Trophy for Blended Red Wine presented to Kanonkop Wine Estate for their Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2003.

WYN BY DIE NOMMER. 7000 wyne van meer as 70 lande is onlangs ingeskryf by die International Wine & Spirit Competition 2008 te London, die mees gesogte kompetisie van sy soort ter wêreld. Slegs 15 van diè trofeë kan gewen word deur wyne van dwarsoor die wêreld. Hiervan het Suid Afrika 5 verower maar meer indrukwekkend is die feit dat vier van die wenners in ‘n area geleë is met ‘n radius van minder as 10 kilometer.

Van die Hutton gronde aan die voet van die Simonsberg tot by die bekende gruis van die Bottelary heuwels wil dit voorkom asof hierdie stukkie aarde wêreld-klas wyne oplewer.
