2016 Mid Harvest Report

According to Francois Viljoen from Vinpro, most producers have seen a decrease in production with the exception of the Orange River and Klein Karoo. We can certainly vouch for that as well! Due to the drought, the bunches and berries are smaller and we’re expecting the smallest harvest in 10 years. The quality of the Pinotage grapes are far higher though.

Anri told me this is the hottest harvest he has ever experienced on Beyerskloof during his 12 years on the farm. This will also be a record as the earliest we have ever finished harvesting Pinotage – we are picking the last bit this week! Then comes the Cinsaut, Merlot and lastly the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Hopefully the quality of the Cabernet and Merlot will be on par with that of the Pinotage, which was absolutely superb! The smaller berries provided excellent colour and aroma.
We will probably be finished around mid-March, which means we get to enjoy the Easter holiday for the second year in a row!

Overall the quality of wines will compare greatly to that of 2005, with the Pinotage in line with 2015. Look out for the 2016 vintage in the next few years! We certainly are excited about it!
